The
American Wild Horse Conservancy – A Historical Land Trust
In 1997, Neda DeMayo founded Return to Freedom to preserve the genetic
diversity of the American wild horse, an endangered national symbol
and zoological treasure. Ms. DeMayo’s vision called for wild horses
to be managed in their original family groups, bachelor band and herds
from the same region, maintaining unique genetic lines.
Over
the past eight years, Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse
Sanctuary, located in California’s Jalama Valley, has served as
proof of concept for Ms. DeMayo’s management plan: on 300 acres,
over 200 horses relocated from our nation’s public and park lands
where they were no longer welcome, represent ten geographic origins,
with some genetic lines dating back 500 years and some with documented
DNA links to the Iberian primitive horse, the Sorria, which may go back
as far as 26,000 years. Population levels are kept in check by non-hormonal,
reversible fertility control methods refined through years of train
and error on many horse ranges across the U.S., including Assateague
Island National Seashore.
Today, just as the American wild horse’s
survival as a species is facing mounting threats from the government,
Return to Freedom is ready to move to the next phase of its plan: a
large scale wildlife conservancy program that will allow genetic lines
of the American wild horse to roam freely in natural herds for generations
to come.
The purpose of
the Conservancy is dual:
*to protect the genetic diversity of the American wild horse for generations
to come, through a continued evolutionary journey that cannot be reproduced
in traditional breeding programs; and
*to serve as a safe haven for thousands of horses displaced from their
original range due to government policies.

Establishing land trusts with deed restrictions and conservation easements
will protect habitat and wildlife for future generations. Within the
conservancies, various breeds of wild horses can continue to evolve
in natural herds without the thrat of capture and removal.
Return to Freedom has located an ideal
piece of land suitable for the purpose of the Conservancy. It is a rich
wildlife habitat complete with many small reservoirs and good migratory
bird populations. This property, with fertile soil and natural year-round
water resources, will be able to sustain up to one-thousand horses.
To begin immediately, funding needs to
be raised for the down payment.
Thereafter, contributions currently used to supplement feed on the limited
acreage of Return to Freedom’s existing facility can ba reallocated
to cover monthly mortgage payments.
Land: 9000 pristine acres in northern
California, fully fenced and ideally suited for grazing. There is opportunity
for future expansion on adjacent land.
Cost: $5 million
Down Payment: $2 million
Sustainability: 1,000 horses
